2009 Emerald Cup – 5 Weeks Out
A week ago on Monday, I woke up with wonderful news! I received the usual call from my wonderful hubby, Shawn, early in the morning. He often calls me from our studio early in the morning to make sure I am up and running! I mean, literally! On Monday his call was not only to find out if I was on top of my game, he was very excited to let me know that he had just found out about a generous sponsorship from some fellow bodybuilder friends of ours.
I have known Vicky and Jack Phipps since 2007. I introduced myself to them after watching them perform their bodybuilding couples routine at the 2007 NPC Last Frontier in Anchorage, Alaska. I was not competing in fitness then, I was just a very interested spectator at that local show, but Vicky and Jack made such an impression on me (as did Tanji Johnson who was guest performing ) that I clearly remember going home that night telling my husband that competing in fitness was going to be my next journey. They inspired me! So, this sponsorship means a lot to me.
Vicky and Jack live in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they own JVP Construction.I don’t have the chance to see them very often at all, as we live here in Chugiak, near Anchorage. We usually bump into each other at local competitions, but I feel like I have a connection with them. Of course we have a connection! It is the dedication to the sport of bodybuilding that keeps us connected! Our lives develop in our own towns, with our respective families, but when it is that time of the year when we all have the opportunity to come together for a competition, undoubtedly, we reunite with them and with all of the people we share our passion with; we reconnect with them and the conversations go on as if never interrupted.
On Monday morning when Shawn called me to let me know the wonderful news I had been feeling a bit down and tired. Yes, I was still in bed, and was not on my treadmill yet. As the true meaning of that generous act sunk in, I got up with a renewed energy. A wake up call I would call it, yes! Thank you Vicky and Jack! That is what your sponsorship meant to me that morning! As individual as the sport of fitness or body building for the matter might seem, truly they are not! I started my journey as a competitor to fulfill a personal need, I don’t deny it, but my desire and need grew stronger and transformed from discovering a new motivation to staying fit and healthy to a mission. I have set forth to continue to compete year after year because what truly motivates me to staying fit and healthy are the very people I can inspire and motivate in the process. I recognize a sponsorship from a single individual as an acknowledgement of the true meaning of my endeavors. This is also where that connection lies.
As I continue training for the upcoming national competitions for this season I will dedicate many of my workouts to my friends Vicky and Jack. I will be thinking of them and picturing them training just as hard as me, and I hope to watch them once more on stage real soon. Maybe at the Emerald Cup next year! That would be so exciting!
Before I get on my treadmill for evening cardio, a little update about my training schedule. This week I will be doing routine practice 4 days and strength training only twice a week. Yesterday was routine practice day and two cardio sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening. Today cardio in the morning and at night, but day of rest from routine and from resistance.
Better get on that treadmill now before it’s too late. Not good to go to bed late these days and I am already stretching it, but I really needed to write my diary and I am so glad I did!
