2009 Emerald Cup – 7 weeks out
HIIT here I come! Ok, now that I just concluded my first training session for the day, I would like to write a little about what I was doing this morning on my treadmill at home.
Now days a lot of people are familiar with HIIT, “High Intensity Interval Training”, but are they familiar enough to utilize it to their own benefit when it comes to fat loss? HIIT being harder on the body than moderate training, it puts a higher demand (more calories are burned) on the body while performing it, and creates a continuous demand on the body to burn more calories even after the HIIT session is over, since the body is working even when it is resting (yes, even when you are relaxing a bit after all of that hard work) to repair itself (higher metabolism!).
Today, it was time to modify my HIIT. I have been feeling stronger cardiovascularly and it is time to change my training as I am getting closer to competition day, so I worked hills into my HIIT cardio to see even more results when it comes to fat loss while maintaining muscle mass and continuing conditioning my glutes.
As to show you in numbers, I am attaching a photo of my treadmill screen. I took this photo after my 30 min HIIT training session this morning. You can see the treadmill shows I burned 400 calories. During my previous HIIT sessions earlier in my training, when I had not introduced hill work yet, the treadmill would show only 300 calories burned. This is a 100 calorie increase per session, and, if I consider the extra 100 calories it will take my body to repair throughout the day, I just created a 200 calorie deficit without modifying my diet plan. What this means is that I will be able to loose 1 pound of FAT more in about 17 days by just increasing my incline during the higher intensity interval of my regular HIIT! Now, that is what I consider maximizing my time, training smarter, while continuing to preserve a full physique and maintaining muscle mass!
So, have you started your HIIT program yet? Do you want to try? If you have any questions fell free to ask and keep
